No:140, 4 May 2017, Press Release Regarding the Rejection by Greece of the Extradition Request Concerning Eight Putschists
Republic Of Türkiye Ministry Of Foreign Affairs
04.05.2017
The Greek judiciary, which we expected to be fair and impartial, unfortunately once again disappointed us and rejected our request for the second time for the extradition of eight putschists who participated in the July15 coup attempt against our constitutional order.
The Greek authorities, who until today have obstructed the members of the terrorist organizations’ targeting Turkey like the DHKP/C and PKK to be brought to justice, repeated their mistakes once again. With this rejection, the criminals who actively participated in the coup attempt that targeted the democratic order in Turkey, killed hundreds of members of our security forces and civilians, wounded thousands of our citizens and attempted against the life of our President, are prevented from being brought to justice. The rights of the victims are disregarded.
We do not see the support and cooperation that we need to see from an ally in the fight against terrorism and crime.
This decision leaves the perpetrators without punishment and provides shelter to the putschists.
It is clear that this decision, which exempts the offenders from the judiciary, is taken with political motives. This decision will inevitably affect our bilateral relations and our cooperation on regional matters with Greece as a country which embraces the putschists.
